EU Consultations on Labour Mobility and Skills in Border Regions

The European Commission is conducting two public consultations aimed at improving cross-border labour mobility and facilitating the recognition of professional qualifications across Europe. Both consultations explicitly highlight the specific challenges faced by border regions, where many workers travel daily across national borders.

The European Commission invites stakeholders to provide feedback on two consultations addressing cross-border labour mobility and skills recognition. Responses from border regions are particularly encouraged. [DEADLINE 2 February]

The Fair Labour Mobility Packageopen until 2 February 2026, focuses on removing obstacles to cross-border employment. Key areas include recognition of professional qualifications and the digital management of employment and social information. Stakeholders are encouraged to share practical experiences to help shape policies promoting fair working conditions and smoother cross-border coordination of labour and social rules.

The Skills Portability Initiativeopen until 27 February 2026, seeks to simplify the recognition of skills and qualifications across borders. It targets barriers that affect the mobility of skilled workers, particularly in border regions where access to employment opportunities can be limited by differing national standards.

Maximising participation from border regions is essential. Input from local stakeholders will help the European Commission gather comprehensive evidence and take concrete action to support workers and employers across borders.

Stakeholders are invited to submit their responses to both consultations and share these opportunities with relevant cross-border actors.
